I am so honored to be the first call in guest on The Drive Talk Show, hosted by Kat Hoyer and Brenda Colter. We chatted about the 2020 Key Challenge – which is one self-awareness question a day, sent to you via text.
In this episode I talked about the importance of habits and routines and their impact on self-awareness.
So many of us wear
“busy” like a badge of honor. We mistake productivity for self-worth. Take some
time today and really think about what you love and ask yourself how you are
incorporating it into your life. If you aren’t, can you figure out a way to fit
I have never had a
problem with feeling like busy as an honor.
Even back in the days when I really was busy, with full time work, taking
six hours of classes in grad school, and having three kids who were in sports,
and various other activities, I never “bragged” about how busy I was. I hated all that coming and going.
Turning 50 I have found
what I enjoy, and I incorporate those into my life. I am also at a place where
I don’t have to be doing all the time.
Day 4 of the KEY Challenge. Here was the narrative that came with today’s question – Self Awareness is so important when trying to make lasting changes in our lives. When we get really honest, we may find habits or thoughts that creep in for us that stop us from reaching our full potential. Take some contemplative time today to see if that may be true for you. Resist the urge to name any outside forces and focus solely on your own thoughts, emotions and actions. After all, that is all we have control over.
At first I thought this would be an easy one, until I read – resist the urge to name any outside forces. This is one I will be spending more time on, but here is my response in this moment.
Ask why, as if you are a four year old. My first quick response would have been a item out there on the fringes of my life. Bad habits being one.
But then I started asking why?
The root of much of the incomplete goals – I don’t think me worthy, or important enough. I don’t make myself a priority. That is where I self-sabotage.
Every day I will post a short snippet of my answer to the daily question.
January 3, 2020
I would start this question by going back and telling my younger self not to listen to what other people want you to do and forge your own path.
My biggest mistake was not doing what I really wanted to do pretty much my entire life. I always listened and did what others thought best for me. From there many more mistakes were made as I pushed hard against a life I didn’t want.
This has led me down the path of many regrets, especially as I get older.
When I was younger I wasn’t brave enough nor did I have the tools to build my own path. But I am a different person now. My life is my own and I don’t take into account what others “feel” is best for me.
That I am grateful you took the that brave step and ran off to Colorado. That one choice saved my life. I needed someone to be brave for me, to pull me out of the mess I was in. You helped me know and understand that it is okay for me to stand up for myself and that I am worthy of good in my life.
While I don’t always honor the braveness of you, I do sometimes stray off the path we are on together, because of you I am able to get back on rather quickly with minimal damage done. I am grateful for my life today and I am grateful for you. Keep making those brave choices.
